The London Borough of Hounslow has achieved excellent collection results for business rates and council tax in London for 2018-19.
For Business Rates, Hounslow collected 99.9% of its business rates, which places us second in London out of 33 authorities, and joint third, nationally. The average collection rate for outer London boroughs is 98.6% (and England 98.3%), so to achieve almost 100 per cent is a great achievement.
The council has also done will in the collection of Council Tax (98.1%), which places it the seventh highest in London.
Cllr Shantanu Rajawat, Cabinet Member for Finance, Hounslow Council, said:
“Hounslow’s Council tax collection rate of 98.1% compares favourably with the average for outer London boroughs and the all England average, both of which are 97 per cent.
“Working alongside our partner, Liberata, residents may not realise that having a high collection rate is a good thing because this helps to pay for the services that are priorities for them. Without a robust collection process, it would be much harder to deliver key services, given reduced government funding and grants that have helped to provide these in the past.
“However, we are not able to retain and spend locally all the Business Rates we collect in Hounslow, as a complex re-distribution mechanism exists. We are continuing to lobby for the full retention of Business Rates to be used locally, so it can benefit local businesses and communities.”
