Together We Are Making Hounslow Cleaner and Greener

We have some fantastic spaces, communities and neighbourhoods in Hounslow, and like many other places, we are experiencing challenges from littering, increases in fly tipping, and a perceived loss of civic pride. These behaviours are blighting our environment and we want to change how we tackle these challenges so that Hounslow remains a great place.

Our Cleaner Borough Strategy was approved by Cabinet in March of this year and that strategy has now been developed into a clear plan.  With our partners, Recycle 360, Greenspace 360, Hounslow Highways and residents we remain dedicated to improving Hounslow’s streets, parks and open spaces.  Under the banner of Cleaner Greener Hounslow, the plan aims to improve recycling and the street environment across the borough, based on a deeper understanding of issues, so we can more effectively target efforts and work with residents to reshape services.

Hounslow has a proactive, passionate and enthusiastic community that is very committed to the borough which has recently been demonstrated through the borough’s support of Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean. The council and its partners worked with many community groups and residents to complete over 50 clean ups – the largest number of any borough in London!

In June, two Community Workshops were held for members of the public to share their ideas with us on how to make a difference in their local communities.  The events were very well attended with lots of great ideas put forward. We are now working together with residents and partner organisations to implement these ideas in the coming months.

Councillor Guy Lambert, Cabinet Member for Highways, Recycling and Trading Companies at Hounslow Council said:

“We all love clean streets and want to live in a borough where people take pride and work together to achieve a cleaner, greener borough.

“I am delighted to see that our Cleaner Borough Strategy has translated into a concrete plan to deal with the borough’s issues head-on and to unite and support the significant goodwill and efforts of our different communities.

“Our recent community workshops and the fantastic efforts put in during the Great British Spring Clean are testament to the energy and drive that exists that is in sharp contrast to those who show little care and who thoughtlessly litter our streets. Our recycling rates for houses and those who have a kerb-side collection is already good, with room for improvement, but with everyone on board, recycling rates for flats should see a sharp increase too.

“Cleaner Greener Hounslow outlines our collective ambition for the borough – a place where people want to live, visit and raise their families, where communities work together to maintain the streets, public realm and lead happy and healthy lives, enjoying our abundant green spaces. I think this is a vision that most people would like to subscribe to. This matters to me personally and I am determined to see it through to fruition. We have been making steady progress and I think we have the people, plans, shared vision and enthusiasm to greatly accelerate progress over the next 12 months.”
